{"id":91,"date":"2009-06-29T21:52:01","date_gmt":"2009-06-29T20:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/?p=91"},"modified":"2009-06-29T21:52:01","modified_gmt":"2009-06-29T20:52:01","slug":"fractal-spinning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/?p=91","title":{"rendered":"Fractal Spinning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">I&#8217;ve been playing with fractal spinning the last few days.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><em>This is a draft tutorial and needs more information and images.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><strong>What is fractal spinning?<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Well it is method of spinning, it works best with tops which have been painted with stripes (there are alternatives, but I will ignore them here for simplicity).<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">The principal is to create a yarn where the plies have different lengths of colour repeat.\u00a0 This is achieved by dividing the top lengthways.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">This method shows how to create a 2ply yarn, though the theory can be applied for 3plies.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">It works best with tops that have a regular colour repeat, 3 colours works well.\u00a0 This example has only 2 colours.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Starting off with 1 length of continuous top (this\u00a0 is Superwash Merino from ColourflDesigns.com), we want to spin all the tops in the same direction, so we need to make a note of the end.\u00a0 I will be spinning from the end with the longer yellow stripe (top of\u00a0 photo).<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2540.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-93\" title=\"Fractal Step 1\" src=\"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2540-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Fractal Step 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2540-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2540.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-93\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fractal Step 1 - Undivided Top<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Split the top along its length being carefuly to keep both peices equally, providing you with 2 lengths of top that are half the width of the original.<\/p>\n<p>You now have 2 lengths of top that are thinner, remember the end to spin from (bottom left of both peices in this picture).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2541.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-94\" title=\"Fractal Step 2\" src=\"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2541-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Fractal Step 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2541-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2541.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fractal Step 2 - First Divide<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>1 of these will become the first ply for your yarn.\u00a0 The 2nd needs to be split again length ways, making 2 equal thinner strips.\u00a0 Remember which end you are spinning from.\u00a0 In the image below: Left; Top for first ply (spinning end is bottom left),\u00a0 Right; Top for second ply, 2 thinner lengths (spinning end is bottom length of both peices).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2542.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-92\" title=\"Fractal Step 3\" src=\"http:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2542-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Fractal Step 3\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2542-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/knit.colourfuldesigns.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/IMG_2542.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fractal Step 3 - Final Divide<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You may want to roll these into a ball, or pre draft by attenuating them if you wish, but this may cause the colours to blend together, disrupting the striping.<\/p>\n<p>When you spin each of the plies, the first ply will have long colour repeats, (in the image above the 1st ply will have 9\u00a0 long colours repeats of yellow, purple), the 2nd ply will have shorter colour repeats (in the image above the 2nd ply will have 18 shorter colour repeats of yellow, purple).<\/p>\n<p>Making sure you spin the tops from the right end will meake sure you get matching colour repeats aong the length, and when you ply you should ply from the same end of each single.<\/p>\n<p>The effect will be a yarn with slow colour changes over laid with faster colour changes, making a really interesting colour blend effect.\u00a0 Where both plies are the same colour you will get a solid section, but other sections will be blended.\u00a0 If you are using more than 1 length of top for a larger garment follow the same steps and identify the same starting end if possible (this is easier when 3 or more colours are present).<\/p>\n<p>I will post more pictures of the finished yarn and a knitted item when its finished.\u00a0 It works well for socks!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been playing with fractal spinning the last few days.
